2 months

Dear Wyatt,

You're 2 months old! You are the most amazing baby ever! Just after you were a month old you had your surgery for your tongue tie. It went very well!! Daddy took the day off and we checked into Children's Hospital at 6am for your surgery then had to spend 6 hours with you in recovery to make sure everything was ok. You can now breastfeed without the help of a shield, I was so excited!

We celebrated Halloween this month too, one of mommy's favorite holidays. Daddy and I went out to dinner and a party with friends and you stayed home with Grandma Parker. I got you a guitar costume...which you hated, don't let your picture fool you.

Just after you turned 5 weeks old you went from waking up once during the night to sleeping through the night. Funny enough your daddy doesn't like it cause now you wake up when he's wanting to leave to go surf....so on days he wants to surf he wakes you up in the middle of the night to feed you so he can surf. (I'm sure you will understand one day how much daddy loves surfing cause you might too).

We are out of the house almost all day everyday...mommy gets cabin fever! You love being out though and seeing the world as you stroll around in the Moby. You love being out and about and even driving around in the car as long as I don't stop (mommy's driving has had to become very strategic so you don't get upset when the car comes to a complete stop at a red light). You've done a lot of new stuff including going to the Wild Animal Park for the first time (you slept), and sitting on Santa's lap (I know, really early, but hey he was there...there was no line and you were in a fabulous mood..it worked). We also had an early Thanksgiving dinner with mommy's family before you turned 2 months. You got to meet all of your second cousins and their kids. Holidays have a whole new meaning now that you are here :)

Some highlights of your 2nd month to remember:
~ your sweet smiles after you eat
~ your loud sucking and eating
~ your insane amount of drool, you'd think a tooth was coming in or something
~ your arms and legs are constantly flailing around
~ how you grasp my hand, and shirt with you little hand
~ how snuggly you are when I get you out of bed in the morning
~ how you smell after a bath
~ you're a little houdini, you can get your arms free of any swaddle
~ how I had to bust out the 6 month old clothing when you were 7 weeks old
~ mommy and daddy shaved your head at 7 weeks old (you'll thank us later)

Happy 2 Months! I LOVE YOU!!

1 Month

Dear Wyatt,

You're a month old! Being your mommy is one of the best and most rewarding jobs on earth...I don't think I even needed to write that cause it's that obvious. You smiled at me for the first time the other day and it just melted my heart. Looking right into my eyes and responding to my voice with a huge smile...priceless!

You get cuter and cuter everyday. And my favorite part about you is you don't cry and fuss for no reason...it's always something. Want more food, need to be burped, wet diaper, poopie diaper, get me out of this carseat, etc...as soon as we respond to the situation you turn the cry off like a light switch.

Second favorite thing...and I'm almost afraid to say it for fear of jinxing it...but since a little after week 2 of being born your pediatrician said because your weight was back up from the initial drop (8.5 to 9.1) that all babies have I could stop waking you up to feed every 2 hours. Ever since you only wake up once a night around 2 or 3 am to eat and that's it. Makes giving birth to a big baby totally worth it!!

Other than that we have had a few fussy moments throughout the days were I figured you were overly tired and just couldn't settle down to fall asleep. So after you've been fed, burped, diaper changed, and had some tummy time and play time you get all tired but can't relax to sleep. So I went out and got the Moby Wrap. Plopped your little froggy body in there nice, tight and secure and BAM instant relaxation. I love that thing...and it seems you do too!

We've taken lots of little trips together...Target, the Mall and of course Babies R Us. You mostly sleep through all of these trips. You hate your carseat but love the motion of the car as it rocks you to sleep. We go to lunch with Daddy a couple times a week...again, you usually sleep. You're a mid-day sleeper for sure. Your biggest trip so far was a day at the Pumpkin Patch with family and friends. More fun for mommy to dress you up and take pictures than it was fun for you...next year you'll love it!

Cousins: Halle, Wyatt and Landon Smith

Happy 1 Month! I LOVE YOU!!

Wyatt Parker Smith is here!!!

Our little boy is finally here..late, but totally worth the wait. His due date was September 25th, but he was born on September 29th. Here is Wyatt's birth story...

Monday, September 28th I was scheduled to be induced at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women at 8am. We arrived, got checked in and were taken up stairs to our birthing suite where we proceeded to do more paperwork with our nurse for the next couple of hours.

By 10am the nurse inserted a tablet called Servadil to soften my cervix. At this point I was about 80% effaced and 1 cm dilated. The nurse told us that they would check me again in 4 hours! If this first one didn't do the job they would be giving me another, and another until it worked. So we began to wait. My mom was working on a quilt and David was watching tv. I read magazines and watched tv as well. We were all expecting a very long day of waiting around for my cervix to soften.
At 1pm, about an hour before I was going to be checked my nurse comes racing in (i thought she was just bringing back my Sprite I asked for) with my doctor and 2 other nurses. The nurses began moving me from side to side, put an oxygen mask on me and before I really knew what was going on the doctor had broken my water. I caught eyes with David whose face had the same panicked look that I was feeling..."what the heck is going on?!!" Wyatt's heart rate had slowed down...WAY down.

Thankfully Wyatt's heart rate began to speed back up and stabilize. Apparently I was having small contractions that I wasn't feeling and they were somehow causing the umbilical cord to be pinched or kinked preventing the flow of blood. The doctor thought that Wyatt's umbilical cord may be wrapped around his neck The doctors and nurses told me that I had been 2 minutes away from being rushed down the hall for an emergency c-section! They also informed me that if these decelerations continued to occur that a c-section would be necessary to prevent any harm to baby Wyatt. Although my main concern was Wyatt's health and safety I definitely wanted to avoid the c-section if at all possible.

Because my water had been broken my contractions began to intensify and before long I wasn't a happy girl. For roughly an hour and a half I had raging contractions 2 minutes apart with no breaks in between! (no flat spots on the contraction monitor) At around 3 o'clock I was told the anesthesiologist was next door giving someone else their epidural and that I could be next if I wanted. I greatfully accepted and received my epidural shortly thereafter. I was really worried about getting the epidural because I am horrified by needles but to be honest getting my I.V. put in was much more painful.

From 3:30 to about 8:00pm everything seemed to be smooth sailing. Friends stopped by to say hi throughout; I was feeling great. Contractions were doing there thing and I was just relaxing and chatting with my friends and family. I LOVE EPIDURALS!

Little did I know, things were about to get scary again.

At around 8 o'clock I had 2 more serious episodes of the baby's heart decelerating about 15 minutes apart from one another. I was worried to death that I would have to get a c-section. We noticed that the decelerations happened only when I was on my left side so guess what...no more left side. Luckily I made it to 10cm at around 11 o'clock with no further complications and it was time to push! This would be the real test for Wyatt's umbilical cord issues. I began pushing with each contraction but each time I pushed Wyatt's heart rate slowed down. So we began a routine of pushing for 3 counts of 10 on my back and then rolling over onto my right side and applying the oxygen mask on me so that Wyatt's heart rate would pop back up as quickly as possible. Thank God for my labor and delivery nurse. She was awesome! So helpful. So encouraging.

At some point during the pushing my doctor came in and basically explained the protocol for a c-section. Not what I wanted to hear. She also mentioned that if I progressed enough that she may be able to use a vacuum to assist in the delivery as an alternative to the c-section. I continued to push for another hour or so and we began to see the top of Wyatt's head (I had a mirror placed in front of me so I could see while I pushed). The doctor came in to assess the situation and it was go time! Next thing I knew there were 4 nurses 2 NICU nurses and my doctor suited up and ready for the big moment. Because of the umbilical cord issues the delivery had to be fast. With my next contraction I was going to push like I'd never pushed before, the doctor was going pull with the vacuum and give me an episiotomy. The contraction started, I began to push, the doctor pulled and within a few seconds his head was out. All of a sudden, 2 nurses jumped up onto the side of the bed and began to push on my stomach! Wyatt's shoulders were stuck!! With a few more pushes from me and the nurses out he came...all 9 LBS of him.

David and I are completely in love! He is amazing!! Our lives have changed so much in the last 4 days and it just keeps getting better. Thank you to everyone who came to visit, called, texted and sent such wonderful messages on facebook and e-mail.

September 25th - 40 weeks

I seriously thought I would have a baby before this date hit. My "due date" as they call it. But, here I am...still making trips to Babies R Us and the mall parking in "expectant" mother parking.

I really didn't want to have to coax the baby out. I mean, who doesn't want the perfect pregnancy and then labor and delivery? And I did as far as some are concerned have a pretty perfect pregnancy. I had all the fun aches pains sure, but I wasn't very sick at the beginning and I'm not ending it with high blood pressure and swelling so I can't complain. Baby just isn't ready to come...I think I must have made just too good of a home inside my body...I think I can be happy about that :)

Within the last month of having weekly pelvic exams I am 80% effaced, 1cm dialated, and baby is head down (zero station) in go position. My body and baby are doing what we're supposed to "so far" just might need a little more help. So, this Monday we're scheduled to be induced. And although I thought it would happen differently, I'm ok with it.

I can't wait to meet my baby boy. I can't wait to be a mom.

Full Term!!

September is here! I'm 37 weeks! and I've been on maternity leave for a week now...and loving it! If I had one goal this entire pregnancy it was to make it full term...and we did it! Way to stay in there baby boy!! But now, I'm sorry, but I'm ready for you to come out. I'm hot and uncomfortable and your dad and I are DYING to meet you!!

These last 9 months have been crazy. It's insane to think I've been pregnant all of 2009. But September is finally here and we're in the home stretch and I'm very excited!! So far, my first week of maternity leave has been very, very busy and I still don't have my hospital bag packed yet. My to-do list gets shorter only for me to think of new things and then it gets longer again.

It's pretty crazy to think that I will be a mom in a matter of weeks, maybe even days who knows?? It's going to be weird not having him moving around inside me anymore. I'm trying to really enjoy these last days being pregnant and cherish every moment...Especially the time with David. We've been together for almost 10 years, married almost 6...all we know is each other and that is about to change VERY soon. It's completely exciting and terrifying at the same time. I can't wait to see him as a dad!!

Baby Shower at Work

On Friday August 21st some of my co-workers threw me a baby shower. We all got out of the office and went to Fuddruckers...yummy! Just before it was time to leave and go eat, all of them came walking down the hallway towards my office (i'm in a different part of the office from the technical staff) and when they got close they pushed my stroller right into my office!! So exciting!! and the best part...it was all put together!!

In my office with a few of my co-workers and our new stroller! (some people not pictured, they were in meetings, so sad)

Donna and Amanda - the awesome master minds behind planning my shower and getting our stroller :) Thank you!!!

The Baby Bump

The Bump: the tell tale sign that you are pregnant...the growth protruding from your body that everyone wants to reach out and touch...the lump that keeps me from being able to sleep on my stomach (*sigh*).
Here are a few pictures that my fabulous friend Mackenzie took for David and I to remember the pregnant days when they are long gone and our little one has made his appearance in this world.

This one cracks me up...we were messing around for Kenz, being silly.
Yes Wyatt, your parents are weird...

32 weeks

2 months left! And thank goodness because do you see the size of the belly?! geez!

I feel pretty good for the most part...if you ignore the back pain, swelling, insomnia, leg cramps, etc...We can also tack on the awesome dry hacking cough I got last wednesday and still have. I made another Drs. appointment today so we'll see if they can help move along the recovery process because I'm bound to break a rib if this coughing doesn't stop.

Overall the anticipation of meeting the little one moving and grooving inside of me is too much sometimes! I just can't wait!!...but then I can cause there is still lots to do in prep for our little guy.

Good-bye Work!!

So I officially told my bosses that my last day of work is August 28th! I added a brand new ticker on the right side to countdown this momentous occasion too! (Also, this is just for maternity leave for those wondering)
I have no clue what I will be doing for an entire month before Wyatt comes, so if you have any fabulous ideas to share, or want to hangout, etc. I’m in! I may end up bored out of my mind, but at least I won’t be staring at this view for 9 hours a day:

27 weeks

I'm 27 weeks today, and it's the last week of my 2nd Trimester!! Insane.
As I cruise into my 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy here are some updates from this past week:

1. I passed my glucose test! I don’t have gestational diabetes!! Yay!! Not that I really thought I would, but the fact that they even test for it and then I have to wait for the results is nerve racking, you know?

2. Wyatt has a 3rd cousin on the way due in February!! Yay!

3. I was checked into triage this week at Mary Birch. I hadn’t felt Wyatt in almost a day and I started to get concerned. So I did what I was supposed to and called my Dr. After checking my chart, they told me I had anterior placenta (brand new information to me) and then told me to go to the hospital. Scary!! After checking into triage and being hooked up to be monitored I got to listen to his perfect little heart beat for about an hour. He was just fine, whew! Apparently I will not be able to feel him as much since my placenta can block or muffle the kicks but should still feel them when he kicks other places and just need to be monitoring them more closely. I’m kind confused by this though because wasn’t my placenta always there? Why was I able to feel him so strongly before and not now? Isn’t he getting stronger not weaker? Doc will be getting an ear full of Q’s next time for sure.

4. David and I started our Childbirth Preparation Classes this week. Looks like we will be learning a lot about labor and delivery. At every class we will be practicing our breathing. We’re already failing that portion…every time she announces a contraction is starting we take a deep breath to start and our partner is supposed to count it out for us. Well my partner, Mr. Musician can’t help but put a beat to it and I start laughing…I’m very sure it’s not going to be that funny in actual labor when I’m having a real contraction :)

5. Invitations for my first Baby Shower went out! I'm so excited to celebrate Wyatt with everyone and party!!

6. I also think I had my first Braxton Hicks Contraction today. I felt a tightening in my belly and when I touched it, it was rock hard in that spot…then went away. Hmmm...

Daddy2B

Although, we’re not technically parents yet, we are expecting our baby boy in the next couple months. For Mother’s Day many, many people said Happy Mother’s Day to me, and I must admit I loved it. Initially I didn’t think moms-to-be actually celebrated. But given that I am pregnant - I have started to jump into the mom role; making major adjustments to my life physically; in my food, exercise, alcohol/caffeine and overall lifestyle, planning for the future, attending more doctors appointments in the last 6.5 months than I have in the last 10 years (not to mention the gallons of blood given), registering for all the necessary baby goods we’re going to need, signed us up for birthing classes, chosen a pediatrician, researched daycares, prenatal yoga, etc, etc, etc…

For Father’s Day today I honor my little Daddy2B for all the wonderful things he has done for our soon to be family of three. Although I’m the one with the 24/7 reminder growing inside me, David has done his fair share in his own way. Top of the list is taking care of me during the so called “morning sickness” period, cooks dinner every night (including making special meals for me, like random requests for pancakes), foot massages, runs to the store for whatever I’m craving, helped me completely clean out the back bedroom (now nursery), painted the nursery, rubs my belly (he loves feeling his son kick), put the crib together and my personal favorite – constantly whistles and tells me how beautiful I look (which he never even did before I was pregnant so it means that much more to me).

So as he goes on living his life the same for now while I continue growing the little peanut; by playing golf, surfing, going out and watching TV…I am so thankful for my wonderful husband and it makes me so excited that my Daddy2B will get to share all his favorite things one day with his son. I love my boys!

Preparing for Wyatt; painting his nursery (how cute is he?)

99 days!

I’m not good at waiting…I think I’ve repeated that over and over in other posts. I mean I was the kid that shook her packages cause I couldn’t wait until Christmas morning for goodness sake. I don’t do that anymore of course :)

But today, I looked at my pregnancy countdown and I’m at 99 days left already!! Double digits! I can’t believe it! When I first put that countdown on my blog I had like 220 something days and now I’m at only 99 days left! I was told when I hit the half way mark time would just fly and they weren’t kidding.

I’ve had so much on my mind lately and it’s a miracle I get any sleep, and even more of a miracle since I have to occasionally pee in the middle of the night. A lot of prayer requests are in order, many I can’t put on my blog for the privacy of those involved, but here is one in particular that has touched my heart. My good friend Amy’s cousin delivered her baby boy at 26 weeks gestational. Please pray for their family as they go through this difficult time. You can follow their journey here: Jackson Vogt
Please pray for me and Wyatt as we countdown these remaining 99 days.

Side note: I totally thought I saw David Cook from American Idol Downtown at Horton Plaza today...totally second guessed myself and just kept on walking. So this afternoon after I mailed out my proposal I Googled his concerts. Oh, yeah, he's just playing at Del Mar Fair tonight! Damn, I totally saw him and didn't say anything! Like, "I was totally rooting for you" (even though I never voted, but who cares right, he won!) ok, that's it, just had to share my star sighting. Gosh, I don't even own his CD, I feel like I should go buy it now or something.

Self Control

Self Control, it’s just oozing out of me, seriously.
When I found out I was pregnant I bought nothing. I swear.
Then when I found out at 15 weeks that we were having a boy I bought 2 little onesies at Old Navy.
A couple of weeks ago I went to register at Babies R Us and bought an adorable little stuffed giraffe. You would have bought him too, so cute.
All these items came with some serious contemplating of course because if you know David…at all…you know he gave me a mini eye rolling. But I know deep inside he’s super proud of me…only 3 items in over 6 months…I think I deserve a recovered shopaholic award or something.

This weekend however, when the cutest little camo slip-ons just like David wears were presented to me I had zero self control…because seriously how cute are my boys gonna look in these matching shoes? (sorry, David’s are a little nasty, he wears them all the time, but you needed the visual right?).

So, other than my mini loss of self control, I had a fabulous weekend in Palm Desert. We ditched the San Diego “June Gloom” and I got to lay by the pool drinking my virgin mango margarita, read trashy gossip magazines, and got a much needed pedicure.
I even overheard a few conversations that me and my belly sparked with a couple groups of ladies, one older group in particular that went down memory lane with each other about their own pregnancies…blew me away when their teenagers showed up. Had I been a crazy teenager, I could have been my own MTV episode of 16 and pregnant and have my very own teenager right now. (you’re welcome mom, aren’t you glad I made you wait to be a grandma?)
See, self control.

Don't scare me like that!

Friday I hit 24 weeks of being pregnant! I can’t believe it…actually, I can, the proof is in the belly.
But seriously, It feels like just the other day I found out I was pregnant and now I am 6 months pregnant, it’s crazy.

On Monday I had my first little scare…Wyatt, decided he didn’t want to be “thumper” that day. Not ok.
Luckily I didn’t fully realize it until after lunch and had a doctor’s appointment at 3pm where I got to hear his heartbeat and everything, not to mention it was my glucose testing day. He perked right up shortly after I downed that bottle of sweet nastiness. Little trouble maker had me worried there for a while. David and I have been working on his nursery and I was moving stuff around the night before…I scared myself into thinking I had done something wrong. Lesson learned I will not be moving and lifting from this point on.

Pregnancy has been great. In the 1st Trimester I never really got “sick” just nauseous for a month and half, and had some awesome and interesting changes to my body. In the 2nd Trimester I have gotten a few leg cramps in the middle of the night, random bouts of insomnia - which is completely normal when I have too much on my mind, interesting cravings like “crazy bread”, learned that I need to clear my belly of the car door when opening it and finally…even though I feel like I have a “I’ve been sitting in a 3 hour movie full bladder” it’s not really. I’m bracing myself for the 3rd Trimester, I hear it can be a doozy.

My favorite part so far is obviously feeling the little one wiggling and kicking around. I can only imagine it’s second to the first time I will be holding him in my arms.

Two things I'm nervous about as I near the end of my 2nd Trimester: I'm getting huge, or at least I feel huge. My Dr. helps reassure me and my 5'2 frame that I'm measuring right on target...I'm just short and the only way for him to grow is out. I fear I am literally having David's baby, a whopper at 10 pounds 7 ounces. Lord help me!
The other thing, pre-term labor. Knowing quite a few people that have delivered pre-term lately, it makes me nervous. I'm staying positive though. Wyatt and I can do this!

Here is my 24 week belly picture. I know, WOW!

What's in a Name?

This past weekend David and I flew to San Francisco with my mom for her birthday. We had a fabulous time and this little girl did some serious hill walking. I should get a medal...seriously. If you're ever in SF and get off the cable car at California and Jones and walk down and then back up that hill, you'll think I'm amazing. David and I didn't get to bike the Golden Gate Bridge this time but I'll be ready next time when I'm not so front heavy.

Happy Birthday Mom!
(freezing on Pier 39)

After a weekend of crazy kicking from "thumper", David and I caught the little ninja in the act and actually saw my stomach moving when he was kicking. It was the coolest thing to see that he's gotten so much stronger in just a week. And while we're on the subject of "thumper"...I think I'm done giving him little nicknames. I figure since his dad calls him by name everyone else can too. Our baby boy will be Wyatt Parker Smith. For those that don't know, his first name, Wyatt is David's middle name and also David's dad and grandpa's. His middle name, Parker is my maiden name.

So come September we'll be welcoming WYATT PARKER SMITH!!!

Thumper

On May 14th (at almost 21 weeks) I felt “Thumper” (my new name for baby boy Smith) for the first time. Everyone kept telling me it would feel like butterflies in my stomach. I don’t know what other people’s babies were doing to make a butterfly sensation but this kid literally “thumps” me. repeatedly. I felt him while I was watching the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy. I think he was probably freaking out cause he didn’t know if Izzie was going to die or not.

I will feel him throughout the day since I’m basically sitting at my desk all day long. He gets super thumpy at night too when I go home and I’m watching tv. Maybe he really likes tv or is also getting super bored with Gossip Girl and wants me to change the station. Don’t worry baby, the season is over, it’s SYTYCD time!
David hasn’t felt him yet. I’m sure he could but he insists on moving his hand around to 50 different spots instead of keep it in one spot and waiting for the next one. I think he’ll just have to wait until baby gets stronger and he can feel them easier.

Because a post is better with pictures, I included a recent one of me and Baby Daddy. (this was 2 days after Thumper's first kick)

20 weeks - We're 1/2 Way There!!

That's me! Can you believe it? Cause I still look in the mirror in the morning and say "oh my goodness!"
I catch David just staring at my tummy sometimes in amazement and shock...he can't believe it either.
Today I had another drs. appt. and we're looking good. He's growing right on track and his heart rate is 148 beats per minute. When I got to listen to his heartbeat today it was almost hard to hear because there was so much static from him moving around...which brings me to my next update...no, I haven't felt him kick yet. There are times when I think I feel the little flutters, but they happen too quick I just can't be sure. I've been so impatient with everything else I know he's going to make me wait until he's good and ready.

Only five months left but there is so much to do before he makes his debut. I've promised myself to slow down and really appreciate these last months I have left. You may be pregnant more than once, but you're only pregnant for the first time once and I want to cherish it.
